Another brand new to me this year was Dorina. A member of their team contacted me to introduce the brand and see if I wanted to try some of their pieces. Now, this initial communication happened pre-COVID 19, as you're probably aware this caused upheaval in the fashion industry. With the brand experiencing difficulties receiving their products from warehouses, I had to wait a little longer to get my hands on some pieces.
This slight delay gave me a bit of time to do my research on the brand, perfect given all the extra time we had during the lockdown! Dorina is a German lingerie brand, established in 1968. They focus on offering 'fashionable and quality' lingerie for every moment of a woman's life, which I think is a perfect descriptor of the brand. A focus on comfortable, everyday pieces to suit a variety of body types is what makes Dorina a staple brand. We much as we all love luxury lingerie, we all need good quality basics that make us feel like we can take on the world.
Dorina strives to be an innovative lingerie brand and continues to experiment with the use of new and dynamic fabrics to compliment their range of styles. They aim for all their products to offer 'maximum comfort, fit and support.' 99% of the materials that they use are OEKO-TEX certified, which is a certification that helps manufactures choose materials that are harmless to health, environmentally friendly and manufactured in a fair way. They are also committing to increase the use of eco-fibres in all of their collections. From their SS20 collection, they have introduced 100% sustainable packaging that uses no virgin plastic or paper.
Of all the pieces of lingerie I have acquired this year, these are my most used. In the world we live in now, with working from home and being confined indoors the norm comfort has become one of my main priorities. Dorina was kind enough to send over three matching sets, one three-pack of knickers and a bralette.
The first of the sets I tried out was the Lianne 2-tone 3/4 cup non-padded bra with the matching hipster knicker. This set is a gorgeous dark navy/purple colour with silver/lilac detailing in the embroidery. The main body of the knicker and the back of the bra is a smooth, soft Nylon and Spandex mix which is comfortable and well-fitting. The main body of the bra and trim of the knicker is floral embroidery. The cups of the bra feature a power mesh lining for added support and comfort. While the embroidery used on this set isn't rough in any way, the added power mesh makes the inside of the cup completely smooth.
I received this set in size 32C and size XS. I arranged this before lockdown, both my bra size and bottoms size have gone up since. Despite my worries, the bra in the 32C is a good fit for me. I ideally wear my bras in a 30 band although the band of this bra is comfortable and feels like it holds me in. The depth of the cups works well for me although ideally, I would like a little extra in the wires so I would be interested in trying the 32D to compare the fit. The knicker fits perfectly! Dorina's size XS translates to a UK size eight, in line with my current dress size being between a size six and eight. I've worn this set multiple times since receiving it, and it holds up very well to washing. Unlike my luxury pieces, I machine wash this set. When washing the bra I place it in a laundry bag to stop the hooks snagging anything else in the washing. I don't place the knicker in the laundry bag when washing but I make sure to wash with like colours to prolong the colour of the piece.
The second set I received was the Nomad 3/4 cup push up bra with matching string. This set is a great basis brown/taupe colour with a neon green bow at the centre front of the bra and thong. The main body of both the bra and the thong is a soft nylon/spandex breathable lace. The crotch of the thong features a polyester outer and cotton inner. At the back of the thong is a single string strap with added strapping details just underneath the waistband. The bra is called a push-up however the padding in this style is minimal with just a thin layer of foam. I've worn this style a lot when looking for a smooth silhouette under winter jumpers and dresses.
I received this set in size 34B and size S. Unfortunately the fit on this set is not as good as the Lianne set. The 34B does feel too big in the band, so I have been wearing this on the tightest setting. Whereas the 32C in the unpadded style fit okay in the cup the 34B feels too small. I also find the size S thong, which equates to a UK size ten, to be too big, particularly around the crotch area. This set also holds up very well when washed, remember when washing padded bras to re-mould the cups as needed when damp and dry in shape.
I was most excited about trying out the Harper set which features a full cup lightly padded pullover bra top and a hipster brief. This set is part of Dorina's 'air lite' range. Both styles feature a Nylon/Spandex material in a dark navy/purple ink shade. These styles both have minimal seams giving a perfectly smooth silhouette.
I received the bra top in a size S and the bottoms in a size XS. Both these pieces fit well on me and are great for everyday wear. I remove the padding in the bra when wearing as it is slightly too small for my boobs but when this is taken out the style fits my boobs well. While I can't wear this set to exercise in, I have enjoyed wearing this while doing light yoga. This set has also been through the wash several times, despite the edges of this set not being traditionally finished, it's holding up remarkably well.
Of all the pieces I was sent by Dorina, these are my most worn. I think multipacks of knickers get a bit of a bad rep, but these are some of the most comfortable knickers I've ever worn. The Gina shorties are made from Modal, a semi-synthetic fabric made from the pulp of beech trees. Before trying these knickers, I'd heard a lot about Modal and how soft it was but after trying it myself I am so impressed.
All three knickers are a size XS, which is my ideal size in Dorina pieces. These three knickers have been through the wash the most out of all my Dorina pieces and they still look brand new! I know that I am going to get so much wear out of each of these knickers. Pictured is the navy blue colourway but I also have them in baby pink and grey which is a great range of colours for underneath every outfit.
The last piece I received from Dorina is the Kilian bralette in black. This style features black floral lace and a polka dot mesh with lined cups for extra support. The underband is slightly thicker than a usual bralette and the elastic is firm which means this bralette fits really well. I received it in a size S (UK ten) which I was initially worried wouldn't fit. Usually, bralettes that fit in the cup are too large in the band but this style strikes a great balance for me. This is the type of style that I am interested to try styling up when the warmer weather returns next year.
I'm so glad to have the chance to try some pieces from Dorina to get an overall idea of their collections and styles. They are definitely a brand I would return to when looking for everyday, comfortable pieces.
